Difficulties arise in transferring Wisconsin cemetery to town authorities

Officials from the Plainville Cemetery Association want to resign and turn over operations of the cemetery to the local town, but that might not be so easy. The association has not had elections in years, and duly elected officials are required for any negotiations with the town, be it for a purchase or through condemnation/eminent domain.

Citizens in Dell Prairie, Wisconsin, approved a measure to acquire an acre of land for expansion of a town cemetery. The purchase price is expected to be about $6,500, lower than the $9,000 offered to the owner earlier.

Residents had complained for years about the condition of the Oak Hill Cemetery in Janesville, so the town council agreed to take over operation and accept a transfer of funds from the cemetery association.
Meanwhile, in Waukesha, the Prairie Home Cemetery is planning for green burials.
